Yesterday I was invited along with several recycling committee chairs from my local region (North Shore of Boston) to tour Trash Menagerie at the Peabody Essex Museum.

Guided by the curator, we went through the thinking behind the exhibit and discussed several of the works selected, which were all animal-related.

As a group, the recycling divas and I discussed their themes and the environmental issues the pieces bring to attention. We also commented on the health risks associated with some of the mediums, such as the 4,800 cigarette filters used to compose a large seashell and plastic bottles heat-molded to create enigmatic jellyfish, marveled at the artists’ creativity, and shared ideas with each other about reuse of discarded objects.

Art is so inspiring. The exhibit gave us ideas how we can incorporate art into our advocacy!
